COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Marietta College women's soccer team fell to Capital 4-0 on Wednesday (Oct. 18) evening. With the loss the Pioneers are now 4-7-2 overall and 1-3-2 in Ohio Athletic Conference play, and with the win Capital is 9-6-1 overall and 4-2-0 in the OAC.
"That was a very good Capital team," said Head Coach
Zack Votra. "All credit to them, they showed us something we haven't seen yet and we're better for it. Great learning experience for our team and some really great minutes from a lot of different faces."
Capital opened the scoring quickly in the 9th minute of the match. Grace Estes sent a shot that past the outstretched hands of Pioneer goalkeeper
Sarah Legg (Edgewood, Ky./Dixie Heights) for a 1-0 Capital lead. Three minutes later, Lexi Snider scored with an assist by Sophia Leonetti and Catherine Zugaro and the Comets went into the intermission with a 2-0 lead.
Melissa Szawranskyj (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville North) gave Marietta their only chance in the first half with a shot on goal, but goalie Liv Alford made the easy save.
The Comets got some insurance in the second half. Estes scored again in the 48th minute and Zugaro scored seven minutes later.
Angelene Kontul (Solon, Ohio/Solon) provided two second half shots and
Emma Egli (Homeworth, Ohio/West Branch) one, but the Pioneers could not put a mark on the scoreboard, and fell 4-0.
Sarah Legg (Edgewood, Ky./Dixie Heights) played all 90 minutes in goal for Marietta, she faced 27 shots, 14 of which were on goal, and made 10 saves.
The Pioneers will return to Marietta Field Saturday (Oct. 21) for Homecoming when they battle Heidelberg University, with kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m.
