Women’s Soccer battles Wilmington to a draw on the road

WILMINGTON, Ohio – The Marietta College women's soccer team took to the road to battle Wilmington College on Saturday (Oct. 14) evening and came away with a 1-1 draw.  With the tie the Pioneers are 4-6-2 overall and 1-2-2 in the Ohio Athletic Conference and the Quakers are now 7-5-1 overall and 0-4-1 in OAC play.

"We had a lot of chances, they had a lot of chances.  This match deserved a draw," said Marietta Head Women's soccer coach Zack Votra. "I'm incredibly proud of our mentality.  This group is determined to compete with everyone."

Both teams remained scoreless in the first 45 minutes of play, but both goalkeepers were busy throughout the half.  Marietta's Sarah Legg (Edgewood, Ky./Dixie Heights) made good on all four of her save opportunities and Wilmington's Heidi Toner did the same with her three save attempts.  Both teams went into intermission with 0-0 tie.

After 20 minutes of play in the second half, the Pioneers got bit more active as they sent a pair of shots that were saved by Toner.  Finally, in the 65th minute, Ryah Haidar (Sylvania, Ohio/Sylvania Southview) broke through with an unassisted goal to give the Pioneers their first lead onf the contest.

With less than 10 minutes remaining, Wilmington's MJ Little tied it back up with an unassisted score. The Pioneers could only gather one more shot, from Demi Mills (Batavia, Ohio/West Clermont), that sailed high over the net.

Marietta finished with 12 shots, seven of which were on goal.  Legg played all 90 minutes in net for the Pioneers, she faced 12 shots, five of which were on goal, and made four saves.

Marietta will return to action Wednesday (Oct. 18) when they when battle Capital, with kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m.
