MARIETTA, Ohio — Marietta College battled the Rochester Institute of Technology to a scoreless draw Sunday (Sept. 4) afternoon in men's soccer action. The Pioneers move to 0-0-2 on the season.
"This was a deserved result for the team. Both teams battled hard, so it is hard for me to be upset with the result," Marietta head coach
Joe Bergin said. "We are really banged up and lost another player in warmups which makes four starters missing. Our depth is really being challenged and I am happy with the guys stepping in. This week is another opportunity for us to get on the winning side of the ledger."
Both defenses played an extraordinary 90 minutes of soccer anchored by their respective keepers.
Luke Price (Perrysburg, Ohio/Perrysburg) was a late addition to the starting lineup for the Pioneers when
Joey Backhaus (Canfield, Ohio/Canfield) was injured during warmups. He recorded eight saves in his MC debut. Jason Trapp notched four saves in net for the Tigers.
It was a physical match with 33 fouls and seven yellow cards issued in the match. Both teams were awarded free kicks just outside the box in the second half, but neither could capitalized on the scoring opportunity.
Marietta is back in action on Wednesday (Sept. 7) when the Pioneers host Washington and Jefferson at 7:00 p.m.
