DELAWARE, Ohio – The Marietta College volleyball team defeated Ohio Wesleyan University, 3-0 (25-18, 25-19, 25-23) on Wednesday (Sept. 28) evening on the road. With the win the Pioneers improve to 12-4 overall and with the loss the Battling Bishops fall to 6-9 overall.
The first set was tied at four, five, and eight before Marietta took control with a 9-3 run, fueled by four
Jillian Fellers (Alliance, Ohio/Marlington) kills. The Pioneers widened the lead to 23-14 after a
Mia Silva (Barberton, Ohio/Barberton) kill and a
Maggie Fellers (Alliance, Ohio/Marlington) ace. Ohio Wesleyan scored four of the next five points, but could not overcome the deficit. The Pioneers would go on to win the first set, 25-18.
In set number two, the Pioneers withstood a strong opening from Ohio Wesleyan. The Bishops bounced out to a 6-3 lead. The Pioneers fought back with the aid of their powerful front line, scoring three kills.
Maggie Fellers (Alliance, Ohio/Marlington) helped her own caused with an ace to tie the contest at nine. Marietta scored on a four-point fun off of close kills from
Jillian Fellers (Alliance, Ohio/Marlington) and
Becca Phelps (Mansfield, Ohio/Madison Comprehensive). Silva got active again with two late in the match kills to score at 21-15.
Jillian Fellers (Alliance, Ohio/Marlington) converted a great
Emory Spitler (Lebanon, Ohio/Lebanon) set to finish the second game. The Pioneers won the second set, winning 25-19.
The third set was close as both teams were deadlocked at nine in early action. Marietta gained the momentum back with a 9-4 run, putting the score at 17-13. The Battling Bishops lived up to their name and fought hard to get back into the matchup. Ohio Wesleyan scored four of the next five points to give them a 20-18 lead.
Jillian Fellers' (Alliance, Ohio/Marlington) thunderous kill tied the score at 20 and
Maggie Fellers (Alliance, Ohio/Marlington) closed out the action with three kills. Marietta notched the victory 25-23 and finished off Ohio Wesleyan in straight sets.
The Marietta offense was led by
Jillian Fellers (Alliance, Ohio/Marlington) with 13 kills and
Maggie Fellers (Alliance, Ohio/Marlington) with 10 kills. Silva added seven kills and three total blocks.
Emory Spitler (Lebanon, Ohio/Lebanon) had 32 assists. Shannon and
Braya Elsea (Circleville, Ohio/Logan Elm) led the defensive effort with a game high 13 digs in the match.
Marietta will return to the court Saturday (Oct. 1) when they travel to take on Baldwin Wallace, with the game scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
