BEREA, Ohio – The Marietta College volleyball team earned a hard fought four-set road win (25-15, 23-25, 25-13, 25-19) over Baldwin Wallace on Saturday (Oct. 1) afternoon. With the win the Pioneers improve to 13-4 overall and 1-1 in the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) and with the loss Baldwin Wallace falls to 9-7 overall, and 0-1 in OAC action.
The Pioneers took early control of the first set as they rushed out to an 8-4 lead, paced by an ace and two kills from
Maggie Fellers (Alliance, Ohio/Marlington). Baldwin Wallace fought back and eventually tied it at 14 on a kill from Nicole Logan. Marietta then rattled off four consecutive points, paced by kills from
Maggie Fellers (Alliance, Ohio/Marlington) and
Mia Silva (Barberton, Ohio/Barberton). After briefly losing serve, the Pioneers got it back and finished of the Yellow Jackets with seven consecutive points, three off service aces from
Maggie Fellers (Alliance, Ohio/Marlington). Marietta closed the set strong and won, 25-15.
After the Pioneers led the second set 13-8, Baldwin Wallace went on a lengthy seven-point run to take the lead 15-13.
Ella Boyer (Bay Village, Ohio/Saint Joseph Academy) took an
Emory Spitler (Lebanon, Ohio/Lebanon) set and delivered a kill that got the Pioneers within one point at 17-16.
Maggie Fellers (Alliance, Ohio/Marlington), Silva, and Boyer all contributed kills on a four-point run to get the Pioneers back in the lead, 20-19.
Braya Elsea (Circleville, Ohio/Logan Elm) converted on two straight service aces and Marietta led 23-20. A costly service error gave the serve back to the Yellow Jackets and they would go on to close out the set on a four-point run and won 25-23.
The Pioneers jumped out to a 13-5 lead in the third set, behind behind several kills from the Pioneer front line. Baldwin Wallace had difficulty getting back in sync as they continued to make some costly errors. Marietta would go on to score 12 of the next 19 points, including two
Jillian Fellers (Alliance, Ohio/Marlington) kills to close the set. Marietta took the third set, 25-13.
The fourth set was close early as it was tied five times, and remained deadlocked at 7-7. The Pioneers points were scored by kills from
Maggie Fellers (Alliance, Ohio/Marlington) and Boyer. Back to back kills from Maggie and Silva put Marietta on top, 17-6. The Pioneers rattled off six straight points to lead 24-18 and the final point came from a
Becca Phelps (Mansfield, Ohio/Madison Comprehensive)-
Emory Spitler (Lebanon, Ohio/Lebanon) co-block. Marietta took the fourth set, 25-19.
The Marietta offense was led by
Maggie Fellers (Alliance, Ohio/Marlington) and Silva, who had 10 kills apiece.
Jillian Fellers (Alliance, Ohio/Marlington) was close behind with nine kills. Phelps and Spitler had four total blocks apiece and Spitler led with 36 assists. Maggie also led the Pioneer defense with 11 digs in the match, and tallied four aces in the match.
Marietta will return to the court Wednesday (Oct. 5) when they travel to take on Muskingum University, with the match scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
