DELAWARE, Ohio – The Marietta College women's soccer team dropped a road game to Ohio Wesleyan, 4-0 on Tuesday (Sept. 27) evening. The Pioneers are now 1-5-1 on the season, and the Battling Bishops improve to 6-1-2 overall.
The first half was a close battle even though the Pioneers were out shot 9-1. The Marietta defense held Ohio Wesleyan to just two shots on goal. The Pioneers lone shot in the first half came in the fourth minute when
Brooke Huffman (Wooster, Ohio/Wooster) fired a shot that went high. It wasn't until the 20th minute that either team hit the scoreboard. Ohio Wesleyan's Athena Kolettis hit the back of the net, just past Pioneer goalkeeper
Madison Miller (Marietta, Ohio/Warren), and the Battling Bishops took a 1-0 lead into intermission.
Marietta replaced Miller with
Brooke Smith (Cortland, Ohio/Maplewood) in the second half and the freshman kept Ohio Wesleyan off the board for the first 28 minutes of the half. The Battling Bishops started to heat up, though, scoring three quick goals. Emma Weber dispossessed the Pioneers from the ball and scored her first goal of the season. One minute later, Tiffany Trinh scored from 25-feet out. 30 seconds later, Paige Neal scored on a crossing pass from Jaelyn Dodson.
Demi Mills (Batavia, Ohio/West Clermont),
Emma Egli (Homeworth, Ohio/West Branch), and
Melissa Szawranskyj (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville North) attempted late shots for Marietta but could not slide anything past Ohio Wesleyan goalkeeper Natalie Ryan. The Pioneers would fall to the Battling Bishops, 4-0
Miller played 45 minutes in goal for Marietta, she faced nine shots, two of which were on goal, and made one save. Smith worked the second half, she faced 10 shots, eight of which were on goal, and made five saves.
The Pioneers will return to the field Saturday (Oct. 1) when they return home to battle Baldwin Wallace in their Ohio Athletic Conference opener. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
