MARIETTA, Ohio – The Marietta College women's soccer team got a win in their Ohio Athletic Conference opener, defeating Baldwin Wallace, 1-0, on Saturday (Oct.1) afternoon. With the win, Pioneers improved to overall record 2-5-1 and 1-0-0 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. Baldwin Wallace fell to 5-5-0 overall and 0-1-0 in the OAC.
"I am so proud of this team today. We played some of the best soccer to date," Marietta head coach
Sean Kaighin said. "This was out first win over BW since 2010 and the first time opening conference play with three points in a very long time."
Both teams fought to a scoreless tie in the first half. The Pioneers out shot Baldwin Wallace 12-7 in the first half, sending four shots on goal to Yellow Jacket keeper Katie Scott. Scott kept the Pioneers from scoring, but
Madison Miller (Marietta, Ohio/Warren) did the same on the other half of the field. The Pioneer goalkeeper denied Baldwin Wallace three times and both teams into intermission ties at zero.
The Pioneers kept up the pressure in the second half, sending four more shots on goal in the first 20 minute, but Marietta was denied each time. Finally, in the 77
th minute,
Demi Mills (Batavia, Ohio/West Clermont) was able to find the back of the net to give the Pioneers their first lead of the game. Baldwin Wallace would go on to attempt three more shots, but they went either high or to the waiting arms of Miller and the Pioneers would secure the victory.
Miller played all 90 minutes in goal, she faced 5 shots, six of which were on goal, and made six saves in the game.
The Pioneers will next play Wednesday (Oct. 5) as they host Muskingum University at Marietta Field. The game is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
