Women’s Soccer claims second consecutive conference win with a victory over Muskingum

MARIETTA, Ohio – The Marietta College women's soccer team earned a 2-1 win over Muskingum University on Wednesday (Oct. 5) evening at Marietta Field.  With the win the Pioneers are now 3-5-1 overall and a remarkable 2-0-0 in the Ohio Athletic Conference and with the loss the Fighting Muskies fall to 2-6-3 overall and 0-2-0 in OAC action.

"A credit to the opposition as they were very well organized," said Head Coach Sean Kaighin.  "For the first time in a very long period, we find ourselves with 6 points in the first two games of conference play.  This group has been phenomenal and I'm extremely proud of their perseverance!"

Marietta opened the scoring in the 15th minute of the match when Anna Bardwell (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville Central) sent a perfectly placed pass from Melissa Szawranskyj (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville North) into the back of the net.   Muskingum answered two minutes later when Madison Yanke sent a corner kick into the box and Marysa Starcher sent a header past Marietta goalkeeper Madison Miller (Marietta, Ohio/Warren), tying the game at one.  Both teams fought evenly throughout the rest of the half, both attempting four shots on goal apiece.  The two teams remained tied at 1 as they entered the intermission.

Marietta was the aggressor in the second half as they spent a great deal of time on the Muskie side of the field.  Marietta broke the tie in the 62nd minute as Bardwell scored again, assisted by Brooke Huffman (Wooster, Ohio/Wooster).   Muskingum was limited to just four shots in the second half, only one of those on goal and the Pioneers would go on to victory, 2-1.

Miller played all 90 minutes in goal, she faced 11 shots,  five of which were on goal, and made  four saves.

Marietta will return to the field on Saturday (Oct. 8) when they travel to battle John Carroll University, with kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m.
