UNIVERSITY HTS., Ohio – The Marietta College women's soccer team was beaten 1-0 by John Carroll on Saturday (Oct. 8) evening. With the loss the Pioneers are now 3-6-1 overall and 2-1-0 in the Ohio Athletic Conference and with the win the Blue Streaks improve to 7-4-2 overall and 3-0 in OAC action.
"Tonight was a game of missed opportunities. We had our chances and didn't finish them," said Head Coach Sean Kaighin. "Regardless of the result, I'm still very proud of what this group has accomplished so far. We remain in the top 6 with a chance to put ourselves closer to the top of the table when we travel to Mount Union on Wednesday."
John Carroll opened the match with a flurry of shots. Pioneer goalkeeper
Madison Miller (Marietta, Ohio/Warren) made three saves in the first nine minutes as she was constantly pressured, The Blue Streaks found the back of the net in the 24th minute as Abby Smith scored. Marietta was only able to get off five shots, but none were on target and the Pioneers went into intermission with a 1-0 deficit.
Miller kept John Carroll off the board in the second half as she made another three saves but Marietta could only muster one second half shot, off the foot of
Alli Stahl (Batavia, Ohio/West Clermont). Carroll goalkeeper Mackenzie Stease registered her only save on the day.
Miller played all 90 minutes in goal for the Pioneers, she faced 23 shots, nine of which were on goal, and made eight saves in the match.
Marietta will return to the field Wednesday (Oct. 12) when they travel to the University of Mount Union, with kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m.
"We are young and still gaining experience," concluded Kaighin. "The future is bright with these women but we have got to continue to learn and press on."
