ALLIANCE, Ohio – The Marietta College women's soccer team lost an Ohio Athletic Conference match at Mount Union, 3-2, on Wednesday (Oct. 12) evening. With the loss the Pioneers are now 3-7-1 overall and 2-2 OAC play and with the win the Purple Raiders improve to 6-2-3 overall and 3-1 in the OAC.
"Despite the final result, we played some fantastic soccer tonight against a tough Mount team," said Head Coach
Sean Kaighin. "As it tends to be, another game of missed opportunities. We must finish our chances going forward if we want to continue pursuit of our goal to qualify for the post-season."
Marietta was first to score in the match, in the 29th minute, to take a 1-0 lead.
Melissa Szawranskyj (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville North) scored her fourth goal of the season with the help of an assist from
Emmah Kronenbitter (Zanesville, Ohio/Zanesville). The Purple Raiders answered ten minutes later when Kaela Turle was awarded a penalty kick and made good, pushing it past Pioneer goalkeeper
Madison Miller (Marietta, Ohio/Warren).
With time winding down, Mount Union put one more first half score on the board. Madison Pepper found the back of the net to give the Purple Raiders a 2-1 lead going into intermission.
The second half saw the Pioneers get back onto the game in the 53rd minute.
Brooke Huffman (Wooster, Ohio/Wooster) scored her first goal of the season, off of an assist by
Angelene Kontul (Solon, Ohio/Solon), and the game was tied at two. Late in the game, Pepper broke free and pushed a shot into the net to give Mount Union the lead, 3-2. Marietta would not attempt another shot for the remainder of the contest and Mount Union would go on to win 3-2.
Miller played all 90 minutes in goal for the Pioneers, she faced 23 shots, nine of which were on goal, and made six saves in the match.
Marietta will return to action Saturday (Oct. 15) when they celebrate Homecoming and battle Wilmington College, with kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m.
