MARIETTA, Ohio – The Marietta College women's soccer team lost to Wilmington College, 4-0, on Saturday (Oct. 15) evening on Marietta Field. With the loss the Pioneers are 3-8-1 overall and 2-3-0 in the Ohio Athletic Conference and with the win the Quakers are now 7-7-0 overall and 1-4-0 in OAC play.
The first half was quiet until the 30
th minute when Wilmington's Maddie Scott outmaneuvered her defender and sent a shot into the lower right corner of the net. That sshot, just past the outstretched hands of Marietta goalkeeper
Madison Miller (Marietta, Ohio/Warren), gave the Quakers a 1-0 lead. Wilmington outshot the Pioneers 11-6 in the first half and the Pioneers could only muster two shots on goal.
Wilmington started quickly in the second half with goals in the 47
th and 50
th minutes. Sydney Shaw scored first with an assist from Maliah Huston and Heidi Edens found the net with the help of an Elizabeth Matthews assist. Later, the Quakers were awarded a penalty kick in the 59
th minute and Matthews made good with her opportunity. Wilmington was firmly in control with a 4-0 lead. Neither team could come up with another scoring opportunity and that is how the contest would end.
Marietta finished with 11 shots, six of which were on goal, but could not make a mark on the scoreboard. Miller played all 90 minutes in net for the Pioneers, she faced 18 shots, 13 of which were on goal, and made nine saves.
Marietta will return to action Wednesday (Oct. 19) when they when host Capital, with kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m.
