Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women’s Soccer shut out by Capital

MARIETTA, Ohio – The Marietta College women's soccer team fell to Capital 2-0 on Wednesday (Oct. 19) evening on Marietta Field.  With the loss the Pioneers are now 3-9-1 overall and 2-4 in Ohio Athletic Conference play, and with the win Capital is 9-2-2 overall and 5-0-1 in the OAC.

"Really felt like a tale of two halves this evening," said Head Coach Sean Kaighin.  "I thought we did well to battle in the 2nd half, create chances for ourselves, and limit their opportunities.  We've shown a bit of resilience and we've got a tough road ahead.  Onto the next one!"

Capital opened the scoring quickly in the 2nd minute of the match.  Sophia Leonetti sent a shot from 15 yards outside the box and squeaked it past the outstretched hands of Pioneer goalkeeper Madison Miller (Marietta, Ohio/Warren) for a 1-0 Capital lead.  In the 39th minute, Catherine Zugaro sent a shot to the upper right hand corner of the net for a score.  The Comets went into the intermission with a 2-0 lead.

Mallory Sullivan (Canal Winchester, Ohio/Canal Winchester) gave Marietta their only chance in the first half with a shot on goal, but goalie Liv Alford made the easy save.

Both teams played a scoreless second half.  The Pioneers stepped up their output with four shots on goal in the second half, two by Demi Mills (Batavia, Ohio/West Clermont) and single shots from Alli Stahl (Batavia, Ohio/West Clermont) and Angelene Kontul (Solon, Ohio/Solon), but could not put a mark on the scoreboard, and fell 2-0.

Madison Miller (Marietta, Ohio/Warren) played all 90 minutes in goal for Marietta, she faced 30 shots, 14 of which were on goal, and made 12 saves.

The Pioneers will return to the field Saturday (Oct. 22) when they travel to Heidelberg University, with kickoff scheduled for 2 p.m.
