TIFFIN, Ohio – The Marietta College women's soccer team was defeated at Heidelberg, 2-0 on Saturday (Oct. 22) afternoon. With the loss the Pioneers fall to 3-10-1 overall and 2-5 in the Ohio Athletic Conference and with the win the Student Princes improve to 6-7-2 overall and 2-5 in OAC play.
"Such an unfortunate ending for us today," said Head Coach
Sean Kaighin. "We're disappointed in the result, of course. We had our chances though, and did not capitalize. Two mistakes cost us the game. We must continue to trust the process and learn as we go. Our two toughest games are left, and I promise this group is hungry to compete!"
Marietta started the match aggressively with three early shots, but none getting into the net.
Emma Egli (Homeworth, Ohio/West Branch),
Taylor Sloan (Belpre, Ohio/Warren), and
Kaylie Ward (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio/Cuyahoga Falls) all unsuccessfully attempted to get the Pioneers on the board, with only Egli's shot considered on goal. After attempting two shots of the their own, Heidelberg jumped out to a lead in the 24th minute of the match. Syd Hewer put the Student Princes on top when she scored from about 20 yards outside the box.
The teams battled for the final 20 minutes of the half, but scored remained at 1-0 at the intermission. The Pioneers out shot Heidelberg 7-6 in the half.
The Student Princes stepped up the offensive pressure and finally extended the lead in the 78th minute of the match. Madi Lause placed her shot in the goal off an assist from Audrey Kaufman. Marietta could not respond and the Student Princes won the match 2-0.
Madison Miller (Marietta, Ohio/Warren) played all 90 minutes in net for Marietta she faced 22 shots, 14 of which were on goal, and made 12 saves.
The Pioneers will return to the field Wednesday (Oct. 26) when they travel to Otterbein, with the game scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
