Women’s Soccer triumphant over Hiram

HIRAM, Ohio – The Marietta College women's soccer team earned an exciting 4-1 road victory over Hiram College on Friday (Sept. 23).  With the win the Pioneers are now 1-4-1 overall and with the loss Hiram falls to 2-5-1 overall.

"All around fantastic team win.  It was so much fun to watch this group compete and they played some really good soccer," said Head Coach Sean Kaighin.   "We'll enjoy this tonight, but then it's on to the next one tomorrow!"

Both teams battled to a scoreless tie in the first half.  Marietta sent shots in the direction of Terriers goalkeeper Skyler Huda, but could not find the net.  Huda registered five first half saves.  Pioneers goalkeeper Madison Miller (Marietta, Ohio/Warren) was also quite busy as she denied Hiram seven times from scoring, including four times in the final 12 minutes of the half.  Both teams went into intermission deadlocked at 0.

Marietta finally put a score on the board in the 59th minute of the match on a goal from Emmah Kronenbitter (Zanesville, Ohio/Zanesville) and, four minutes later, Taylor Sloan (Belpre, Ohio/Warren) did the same giving the Pioneers a two goal lead.  Hiram cut the lead in half in the 65th minute when Caitlin Smith slid a shot by replacement keeper Brooke Smith (Cortland, Ohio/Maplewood).  Four minutes later, the Pioneers answered back as Melissa Szawranskyj (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville North) scored her third goal of the season.  The Pioneers would tack on some insurance when Alli Stahl (Batavia, Ohio/West Clermont) punched in a goal in the 87th  minute, to make the score 4-1.

Miller worked the first half in goal and faced 10 shots, seven of which were on goal, and made seven saves.  Smith came in to play the second half.  She faced five shots, three of which were on goal, and made two saves.

Marietta will return to the field on Tuesday (Sept. 27) when they travel to take on Ohio Wesleyan University, with kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m.
