Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's Soccer finishes in a 2-2 tie at Chatham

PITTSBURGH, Pa. — Marietta College salvaged a draw on the road at Chatham University to open the 2022 season Thursday (Sept. 1) evening in nonconference men's soccer action. Sam Holthaus (Bedford, Ohio/University) scored an unassisted goal in the 84th minute to level the match at 2-2.

This is a game that, while I'm happy with our fight, we should have never been in this situation. We have the game in hand at 1-0 controlling the play but we give up a soft goal to give them life. Then a second goal puts us behind," Marietta head coach Joe Bergin said. "Credit to the boys for getting level. But we had chances to win and could not get it done."

Marietta grabbed the lead in the 22nd minute on an unassisted goal from Jacob Roberto (Berea, Ohio/Berea-Midpark).  The Pioneers dominated play in the first half with several shots off the frame and with an open net, but the Navy Blue and White couldn't capitalize on the opportunities.

Chatham tied the match at 1-1 in the 57th minute. Pearse Bialowas scored off an assist from Marco Piccolo. Leandro Nasso's unassisted goal in the 74th minute gave the Cougars a 2-1 lead.

After Holthaus evened the score at two, Jovonni Auddino (Columbus, Ohio/Westerville North) had a chance to give Marietta the win in the 89th minute. His shot hit the post. A late corner kick for the Pioneers was successfully defended by Chatham as time expired.

Marietta had 19 shots in the match, including 10 shots on goal, while Chatham managed four total shots. The Pioneers were awarded 12 corners to just one for the Cougars.

"Sadly we picked up right where we left off last year with injuries. Our great depth allowed us to play the way we did," Bergin said. "No rest for us as we have a real good RIT coming in on Sunday. We have to find a way."

Marietta hosts RIT on Sunday (Sept. 4) at 1:00 p.m.
