MARIETTA — On June 23, 1972, President Richard M. Nixon signed the Education Amendments of 1972 into law. Within the Education Amendments are 37 words are known as Title IX.

"No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any educational program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance."

Today marks the 50th anniversary of Title IX.

Over the past 50 years, Marietta College's female athletes, coaches, and teams have achieved amazing success, and we are looking forward to even more accomplishments. During the 2022-23 academic year, the College will honor the triumphs, inspiration, and leadership of these women as we mark 50 years of Title IX.

Our celebration of the 50th anniversary of Title IX, the landmark legislation that has had a significant impact on women's sports, will include on-campus events, recognition of former athletes and coaches at games, as well as stories, videos, podcasts and social media posts that will honor those who advocated for women's athletics.

"Many of our women athletes today don't understand the importance of Title IX, and how hard the generations before them worked to allow us to be where we are today," Marietta women's rowing coach Abby Lord said. "I am looking forward to speaking with my team this season about the access to sport that Title IX created, and I am also inviting former players and coaches to speak to my team so they can hear their inspirational stories."

As we look back at our history of women's athletics over last half century, it's imperative we reflect on Title IX's impact and continual progress forward. It is also imperative to acknowledge that there is more work that needs to be done and to accomplish this we will need your help. We welcome our entire community to join us during our celebration of Title IX by attending games or special events, but we also ask that you consider making a financial gift specifically for women's athletics. This will not only help our current female student-athletes, but also future generations of Pioneers who will succeed in the classroom and on the playing field. When you visit our "Give" page, simply select "Women's Sports Fund" in the designation box.
