ADA, Ohio — Marietta College couldn't overcome an early deficit and lost to Ohio Northern University, 9-4, Saturday (April 9) afternoon in Ohio Athletic Conference men's lacrosse. The Pioneers fall to 2-10 overall and 0-5 in the OAC. ONU improves to 9-2 on the season and 5-0 in the OAC.
The Polar Bears scored three times in the first quarter and added another in the second for a 4-0 halftime lead. ONU added the first goal of the second half as well and held a 5-0 lead before the Pioneers got on the board.
Nate Neal (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) scored the Pioneers' first goal with 8:50 left in the third quarter.
Chase Franklin (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) picked up the assist.
ONU's Sebastian Michaud notched the next two goals, his third and fourth of the match, extending the Polar Bear lead to 7-1 with 6:36 left in the third period.
Franklin scored with an assist from
Chase Mullen (Cabot, Pa./Knoch) to close out the third quarter with Ohio Northern Northern leading 7-2.
Both teams scored two goals in the fourth quarter. For Marietta, Neal tallied his second goal of the match with an assist from
Zach Radcliffe (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) and
Connor Ficke (Saint Leonard, Md./Calvert) notched an unassisted goal in the final minute of the game.
Dane Barker (Cincinnati, Ohio/Summit Country Day) went the distance in goal for the Pioneers recording 20 saves. Cole Zaferakis notched six saves and allowed two goals in 55 minutes for the Polar Bears, while Matt Huizenga gave up two goals and made two saves in five minutes of action.
Marietta hosts Wilmington College on Friday (April 15) for Senior Day. The game is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.
