MARIETTA, Ohio – The Marietta College men's lacrosse team capped off a wonderful Senior day with an offensive explosion, scoring 23 consecutive goals to earn a 23-1 victory over Wilmington College, on Friday (April 15) afternoon. With the win the Pioneers improve to 3-10 overall and 1-5 in the Ohio Athletic Conference and with the loss the Quakers fall to 2-11 overall and 0-6 in OAC action.
Marietta got on the board quickly with a score a little over a minute into the game.
Quinn Rundgren (Angier, N.C./Fuquay Varina) was set up with a great pass from
Jackson McGill (New Market, Md./Oakdale) and the Pioneers were in the lead and would never look back.
Chase Mullen (Cabot, Pa./Knoch) scored 20 seconds later from a
Connor Ficke (Saint Leonard, Md./Calvert) assist. Marietta honored all 10 of their seniors in the pregame and many were awarded with the start.
Henry Clark (Moreland Hills, Ohio/Orange) got the start and scored his first goal of the season at the 6:56 mark, with a Ficke assist. Rundgren scored once more and Mullen scored twice more and the Pioneers were leading 8-0 after the first period.
Zach Klein (Evergreen, Colo./Evergreen) got the action going in the second period with a goal a minute and a half in. He was one of five Pioneers to get their first goals of the season in the game.
Chase Franklin (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) scored at the 10:31 mark and
Connor Ficke (Saint Leonard, Md./Calvert) scored twice in the span of five minutes.
Logan Podgorski (Pittsburgh, Pa./Bethel Park) punched in his first goal of the season and
Zach Radcliffe (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) scored in the closing seconds of the half to make the score 12-0 going into intermission.
The Pioneers were always on the offensive in this matchup and got moving quickly in the third period. McGill took a Klein pass and deposited it in the goal.
Kyle Fleshman (Davidsonville, Md./South River) then scored three minutes later.
Josh Walters (Cleves, Ohio/Taylor) and
Jake Stern (Wheeling, W.Va./The Linsly School) got into the act, both scoring their first goals of the year. Marietta finished the period up 20.
Justin Blasko (Poland, Ohio/Poland Seminary) was the final senior to get into the score book with a goal just one minute into the period. Marietta was hit with an unsportsmanlike penalty with four minutes remaining, putting the Quakers with a 'man advantage' and they used it wisely, as Joe Norton scored Wilmington's lone goal in the contest.
Ben Millard (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Kenston) got the start for the Pioneers in the net. He faced 11 shots, four of which were on goal and had three saves.
Mullen and Podgorski led the team with three goals apiece. Klein led with four assists but Ficke and McGill were close behind with three assists apiece. Defensively, Klein led with two caused turnovers.
Nathan Grover (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) was perfect in face-off attempts with 14 wins and picked up 10 groundballs.
Nate Neal (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) did well in the second half going 8 for 8 in faceoffs and picking up a team high 11 groundballs.
Marietta will return to the field Wednesday (April 20) when they travel to take on Otterbein University, with the game scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
