Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Women’s Lacrosse victorious over Heidelberg on Senior Day

MARIETTA, Ohio – The Marietta College women's lacrosse team earned a 17-4 victory over Heidelberg University on Saturday (April 20) afternoon on Marietta Field.  With the win the Pioneers improve to 7-7 overall and 1-6 in Ohio Athletic Conference play, and with the loss the Student Princes fall to 0-14 overall and 0-7 in the OAC.

"Great team win today," said Head Coach Malory Nadrah.  "Once we got our bearings, we played excellent defense and finished on attack. So many great assisted plays today, it was fun to watch."

Heidelberg got the first goal of the game three minutes into the quarter.  Sydney Shaffer scored an unassisted goal to give the Student Princes the lead, but it would be short-lived.  The Pioneers finally got the machine going. Rachel Sivie (Washington, Pa./Trinity) took a great pass from Hope Adams (Delaware, Ohio/Bishop Watterson) and tied up the contest.  Megan McGriff (Lakewood, Colo./Bear Creek) scored just a few seconds later and Marietta would not look back.  Mackenzie Dyott (Easton, Md./Easton) scored from an Anna Callow (Wadsworth, Ohio/Wadsworth) assist and Callow scored at the 3:00 mark off of another great Adams assist.  Kellie Spence cut the lead in half with a late 1st Quarter goal but Carlee Kernodle (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park) and Casey Roeder (Milford, Ohio/Milford) connected on a sweet goal with seconds left and the Pioneers enjoyed a 5-2 lead after one period.

Marietta held Heidelberg scoreless in period two while extending the lead with six goals of their own.  Leeza Jongekryg (Holland, Mich./West Ottawa) got in on the fun three minutes into the quarter.  Sivie scored again off of a Dyott assist.  Adams and Callow scored in rapid succession and Kyla Andreas (Shirley, N.Y./Longwood) scored her first of two goals on the day with four minutes remaining in the half.  Marietta went into intermission with comfortable 11-2 lead.

Shelby Millheim (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom), who was honored in the pregame with several of her senior teammates, scored quickly to begin the third quarter.  Fellow seniors Callow and Kernodle also scored to put the lead at 11 going into the final period.  Lindy Brobeck (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington) and Sophia Verona (Shinnston, W. Wa./Our Lady of Victory) both got their first goals of the season in the fourth period.  Tack on Andreas' second goal of the day and the Pioneers collected their first conference win of the season.

Maddie Leers (Crystal Lake, Ill./Barrington), another senior honored, got the start in the net and played the first 30 minutes.  She then got to play some offense in the second half and even fired off some shots. She faced eight shots, all of which were on goal, and made six saves.  Leers notched her fifth win on the season.  Abby May (Randolph, Ohio/St. Vincent-St. Mary) played in the second half.  She faced 11 shots, all of which were on goal, and made nine saves.

The Pioneers were led by Callow, who scored three goals and assisted on three goals.  Andreas, Sivie, and Dyott all tallied two goals apiece.  Adams and Dyott also assisted on three goals apiece.  Jongekryg led with five draw controls.

"Thank you to my seniors," added Coach Nadrah. "This group was my first recruit class and committed to begin Marietta Womens Lacrosse with me. I am so proud of the person each of them has become. It has been so fun watching them grow and build this program from our inaugural season to now. Whatever success we cultivate in the future, they have laid the foundation."

The Pioneers will return to the field Wednesday (April 27) when they travel to battle Muskingum University in their regular season finale, with the game scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
