CIRCLEVILLE, Ohio — The Marietta College men's tennis team split a pair of matches Saturday (April 16) afternoon. The Pioneers defeated Ohio Christian University, 6-1, and lost to Ohio Northern University, 9-0.
Marietta moves to 3-8 overall and 0-2 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. Ohio Christian falls to 1-11 on the season, while Ohio Northern improves to 16-4 overall and 3-0 in the OAC.
In the first match of the day against Ohio Christian, the Pioneers won two of the three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead heading into singles.
Elliot Britton (High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire/John Hampden Grammar) and
Tyler Wise (Marietta, Ohio/Marietta) beat Ryan Batig and Davis Mack at No. 2 by the score of 6-0. At No. 3,
Gavin Donnell (/) and
David Frazier (Louisville, Ohio/Louisville) beat Stephen Marshment and Jacob Smith, 6-0. In the top spot, Chris Hupp and Zach Savino bested
Spencer Hall (Louisville, Ohio/Louisville) and
Elivh Perez (Mexico City, Mexico/La Salle), 7-6 (7-3).
Marietta won all but the No. 1 singles match. In the No. 1 match, Hupp defeated Perez, 6-0 and 6-0. Hall defeated Savino at No. 2, 6-3 and 6-3. At No. 3, Wise posted a 6-1, 6-0 win over Marshment.
Britton took the No. 4 match from Batig, 6-0 and 6-1, while at No. 6, Donnell bested Smith, 6-0 and 6-0. In the No. 5 match, Frazier was leading Mack, 6-0 and 4-0 when Mack retired.
Against Ohio Northern, the Polar Bears swept the doubles matches. In the No. 1 match, Zach Beaschler and Vinh Thai downed Hall and Perez, 8-2. Britton and Wiser lost to Andrew Cochran and Peyton Specht at No. 2, 8-0, while Isaac Spar and Sam Sran beat Donnell and Frazier at No. 3 by the same score.
Cochran beat Perez at No. 1 singles, 6-1 and 6-0. Hall lost to Thai at No. 2, 6-0 and 6-0, while Sran bested Wise at No. 3, 6-1 and 6-2.
At No. 4, Specht defeated Britton, 6-1 and 6-0. In the fifth position, Frazier lost to Beaschler, 6-0 and 6-0. At No. 6, Spar blanked Donnell, 6-0 and 6-0.
Marietta hosts Otterbein University on Friday (April 22) at 3:30 p.m.
