HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. — The Marietta College women's tennis team had a difficult assignment as they battled a very tough Cairn University team. In the end, the Pioneers could notch a single victory and was shut out by the Highlanders 9-0. Marietta fell to 2-6 overall and Cairn improved to 8-1 on the season
At No. 1 doubles, Marietta's Anne Thompson (Wilmington, Ohio/Clinton-Massie) and Ashton Binegar (/) battled hard but came up short to Paige Kemper and Brianna Miller, 8-3. Parker Mauk and Abigail Hartshorn were defeated by Sarah Jackson and Ersy Neal, 8-0 in the second doubles match. Marietta's Drew Taylor () and Madilyn McKitrick (/) were defeated in the third doubles match by Rachel Campbell-Robertson and Daphne Neal, 8-1.
In the No. 1 singles match, Thompson fell in straight sets to Kemper. In No. 2 singles, Binegar took Miller to a first set tiebreaker before falling short and losing the second set as well. Hartshorn lost the No. 3 singles to Neal, 6-0 and 6-0. Cairn's Jackson bested Taylor 6-0 and 6-0 in singles match No 4. Mauk was defeated by Rachel Campbell-Robertson in singles match No. 5, 6-2 and 6-0. McKitrick was defeated by Abby Horning in a competitive match, 6-4 and 6-2 in the final singles match.
Marietta continues the Spring Trip Thursday (March 10) as they battle Messiah University. The match begins at 8:30 a.m.
