HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. — The Marietta College women's tennis team made their return to beautiful Hilton Head Island to participate in a spring break trip that was so sadly missed last year. On Sunday (March 6), the Pioneers were defeated by Gettysburg College by the score of 9-0. Marietta is now 2-5 on the season and Gettysburg improve to 5-0.
At No. 1 doubles, Andrea Brazyte and Gillian Rozenfeld beat Marietta's
Anne Thompson (Wilmington, Ohio/Clinton-Massie) and
Ashton Binegar (/), 8-1. Parker Mauk and Abigail Hartshorn were defeated by Julia Gowland and Tierney Cantwell, 8-1 in the second doubles match. Marietta's
Drew Taylor () and
Madilyn McKitrick (/) were bested in the third doubles match by Kate Alianiello and Molly Foresman, 8-2.
In the No. 1 singles match, Thompson was able to win the first set versus the Bullets' Alex Rieg before losing the next two sets. In No. 2 singles, Binegar was defeated by Catherine Haley, 6-1 and 6-4. Hartshorn lost No. 3 singles to Shoshi Dondes, 6-1 and 6-0. Gettysburg's Alexis Rinker downed Taylor 6-1 and 6-0 in singles match No 4. Mauk played well against Niki Melnick but fell to defeat in singles match No. 5, 6-2 and 6-3. McKitrick was beat by Shelby Deron, 6-0 and 6-2 in the final singles match.
Marietta continues the Spring Trip Tuesday (March 8) as they battle Swarthmore College. The match begins at 6:30 p.m.
