MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College women's lacrosse team posted a decisive 16-2 win over Hanover College Saturday (March 5) afternoon. The Pioneers improve to 4-0 on the season, while Hanover falls to 1-4 overall.
"We had lots of good work today but still made some mistakes on the attacking end. It's important that we eliminate those mistakes before we get into the our last few touch non-conference games and then into the conference schedule," Marietta head coach
Malory Nadrah said. "The defense did a great job. We caused several turnovers and had some really nice transitions. Our goalie staff had another great game today."
Marietta's leading scorer,
Hope Adams (Delaware, Ohio/Bishop Watterson), wasted no time getting the Pioneers on the board this afternoon scoring 35 seconds into the game. She would finish the day with two goals giving her 14 on the young season.
The Pioneers out the game out of reach early building a 8-0 lead with just over five minutes remaining in the second quarter. In addition to the two goals from Adams,
Megan McGriff (Lakewood, Colo./Bear Creek),
Megan Marshall (Naples, Fla./Estero),
Mackenzie Dyott (Easton, Md./Easton),
Anna Callow (Wadsworth, Ohio/Wadsworth) and
Leeza Jongekryg (Holland, Mich./West Ottawa) each tallied one goal in the MC run.
Hanover got on the board with 3:39 left in the period on a goal from Milah Young. Young scored both Hanover goals in the match adding a second score in the third quarter.
After Young's second goal made it 9-2, Marietta rallied for the final seven goals of the afternoon. McGriff and
Carlee Kernodle (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park) each had two goals in the second half, while
Kyla Andreas (Shirley, N.Y./Longwood), Shelby Milheim and
Rachel Sivie (Washington, Pa./Trinity) added one goal apiece.
Maddie Leers (Crystal Lake, Ill./Barrington) and
Abby May (Randolph, Ohio/St. Vincent-St. Mary) split time in goal for the Pioneers. Leers started and got the win, while May had a pair of saves and allowed the two Hanover goals. Each keeper played 30 minutes.
Delaney Benner went the distance in goal for Hanover and made 11 saves.
Marietta is back in action on Tuesday (March 8) with a 12 p.m. match at North Carolina Wesleyan.
