ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. – The Marietta College women's lacrosse team kept the streak alive on the road as they defeated North Carolina Wesleyan, 14-3, on Tuesday (March 8) afternoon. With the win the Pioneers improve to 5-0 overall and with the loss the Battling Bishops fall to 0-4.
Head Coach
Malory Nadrah said, "Great defensive and draw play today. Our offense still needs a lot of improvement. Although we're excited to be 5-0, we have a huge challenge next Wednesday that will really reflect our growth. It's important we stay focused and continue to work on our areas of improvement."
North Carolina Wesleyan got on the board first just 40 seconds into the match when Madeline Graham scored a free position goal.
Hope Adams (Delaware, Ohio/Bishop Watterson) tied it up at the 12:17 mark and
Megan McGriff (Lakewood, Colo./Bear Creek) gave the Pioneers the lead just two minutes later. Adams tacked on another goal in the closing seconds to give Marietta a 2-1 after one period.
Marietta kept the scoring going in the second period as the Pioneers added five more goals.
Megan Marshall (Naples, Fla./Estero) found the net just 45 seconds into the period.
Mackenzie Dyott (Easton, Md./Easton) and
Leeza Jongekryg (Holland, Mich./West Ottawa) scored in the next three minutes. Dyott's goal was assisted by McGriff. Marshall scored her second goal of the day inside the final minute.
Rachel Sivie (Washington, Pa./Trinity) tacked on her fourth goal of the season, with an assist from
Anna Callow (Wadsworth, Ohio/Wadsworth), in the final seconds. The Pioneers led at the half, 8-1.
The third quarter saw much of the same Pioneer action as Marietta scored in the opening minute. Jongekryg scored her second goal of the match.
Shelby Millheim (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom) got in on the fun as she scored at the 13:28 mark. Marshall scored on a free position shot midway through and Callow scored with seconds left in the quarter to give the Pioneers an 11 goal lead into the final quarter. Adams and Marshall scored quickly in the final stanza. N.C. Wesleyan scored last as Maddie O'Neill and Deja Hartman snuck goals past replacement goalkeeper
Abby May (Randolph, Ohio/St. Vincent-St. Mary). In the end, Marietta was a 14-3 victor.
Maddie Leers (Crystal Lake, Ill./Barrington) got the start in the net for the Pioneers and played 22 minutes. She faced two shots, both on goal. She saved one and gave up one goal. May came in midway through the second quarter and played until the end. She faced six shots, five of which were on goal, and made three saves.
Marietta was led by Marshall, who scored four times. Adams scored three goals on the afternoon and Jongekryg scored twice. McGriff and Millheim each scored a goal and picked up two groundballs. Marley Phillipe and
Jordan Jeffries (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore Polytechnic) played well defensively as they both caused two turnovers.
Kyla Andreas (Shirley, N.Y./Longwood) led the team with five draw controls.
Coach Nadrah added, "Kyla and Carlee (Kernodle) did a phenomenal job on the circle today. Their play really skewed the momentum for us and helped us get the win."
The Pioneers will return home Wednesday (March 16) when they host the Washington and Jefferson College, with a start time of 7 p.m.
