UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio – The Marietta College women's lacrosse team fell to host John Carroll University, 16-5 on Saturday (March 26) afternoon at snowy Don Shula Stadium. With the win the Blue Streaks improve to 2-4 overall and are 1-0 in the Ohio Athletic Conference, and with the loss the Pioneers are now 6-2 overall and 1-0 in OAC action.
"We faced some challenging weather today, but JCU faced the conditions better than we did," said Head Coach
Malory Nadrah. "We played much better in the second and third quarter but the first quarter got away from us. We had some bright spots defensively, but lots to work on as we begin conference play."
Marietta started quickly with a goal in the first minute by
Mackenzie Dyott (Easton, Md./Easton). John Carroll answered quickly as Alex Heishman would get the Blue Streaks on the board. John Carroll would go on the score nine more times to close out the period. Shannon Burdick scored three times. Olivia Gerlach would go on to score twice and Heishman would add another to give the Blue Streaks a 10-2 lead over Marietta after one period.
Leeza Jongekryg (Holland, Mich./West Ottawa) and
Hope Adams (Delaware, Ohio/Bishop Watterson) tried to get the Pioneers back into the game with second period goals.
Rachel Sivie (Washington, Pa./Trinity) scored in the third period but Marietta could get no closer. The game was called after three periods due to the excessive snowy conditions and the Blues Streaks were awarded the 16-5 victory.
Maddie Leers (Crystal Lake, Ill./Barrington) played the first 30 minutes in goal for the Pioneers, she faced 32 total shots, 25 of which were on goal, and made 12 saves.
"We had some great plays on defense today. Maddie made awesome saves. Jordan Jefferies and Kayla Andreas played great one-on-one D and Jordan had some great caused turnovers for us," concluded Coach Nadrah.
The Pioneers will return to the field Saturday (March 30) when they host the University of Mount Union, with the game scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
