MARIETTA, Ohio — In a battle for first place in the Ohio Athletic Conference men's soccer standings, defending champion John Carroll University blanked Marietta College, 3-0, Saturday (Oct. 8) evening.
The Pioneers fall to 4-5-3 overall and 2-1-0 in the OAC. John Carroll improves to 8-3-1 on the season and 3-0-0 in league matches.
Patrick Koenig scored an unassisted goal in the 18th minutes to give John Carroll the early lead. Koenig worked his way around the Pioneer defense and fired a shot from the top of the 18-yard box for the goal.
The score remained 1-0 until the 62nd minute. Ben Brucken crossed the ball to Nicholas Ruggiero who finished it off for a 2-0 Blue Streak lead.
Brendan Swann added an insurance goal in the 86th minute.
Jake Vogrin went the distance in goal for JCU posting four saves and a clean sheet.
Joey Backhaus (Canfield, Ohio/Canfield) had two saves in goal for the Pioneers in 90 minutes of action.
Marietta hosts Mount Union on Wednesday (Oct. 12) at 7:00 p.m.
