MARIETTA, Ohio — Mount Union scored 63 seconds into the match as the Purple Raiders went on to defeat Marietta College, 3-1, Wednesday (Oct. 12) evening in Ohio Athletic Conference men's soccer action. The loss drops Marietta to 4-6-3 overall and 2-2-0 in the OAC. Mount Union improves to 7-2-4 overall and 2-1-1 in the OAC.
Playing in a driving rainstorm, the Purple Raiders earned a corner kick in the opening minute of the match. Carter Hancock took the corner from the left side and dropped a perfect ball at the near post where Ryan Sarkisian waited to put the ball in the back of the net.
Mount Union doubled its lead in the 22nd minutes on an unassisted goal from Rylan Wikle. A mistake by the Pioneer defense left Xavier Pinaya with an open goal in the 49th minute and he delivered the goal with ease making it 3-0.
Lightning halted the match with just over 30 minutes left on the clock. A 70-minute delay ensued before the teams were able to continue. Heavy rains plagued the remaining minutes affecting play.
Marietta was able to get on the board in the final seconds of the match on a free kick from
Elliot Britton (High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire/John Hampden Grammar) at the 89:52 mark.
Joey Backhaus (Canfield, Ohio/Canfield) posted 10 saves in goal for the Pioneers. Lucas Fields had seven saves for the Purple Raiders.
Marietta travels to Wilmington College on Saturday (Oct. 15) for a 7 p.m. match.
