NEW CONCORD, Ohio — Marietta College scored three unanswered goals as the Pioneers downed rival Muskingum University by the score of 3-1 Wednesday (Oct. 5) night in Ohio Athletic Conference men's soccer action.
"Statistically it was a dominant performance. But Muskingum is very organized and tough to break down," Marietta head coach
Joe Bergin said. "We got behind and I was quite pleased with our response. We didn't complain or get down. We got to work."
Marietta dominated play in the first half firing off 15 shots, while allowing the Muskies only one shot. However, neither team found the back of the net and the teams went into halftime with the score tied at zero.
Despite completely controlling the game, the Pioneers found themselves in a hole when Muskingum's Mahfuz Yakubu scored an unassisted goal in the 60th minute.
The Muskie lead was short-lived as
Caden Ferguson (Mars, Pa./Mars Area) leveled the match two minutes later with an unassisted goal for the Pioneers.
Marietta took the lead in the 80th minute when Muskingum's Thomas Rooney was issued a yellow card for a foul in the box.
Jacob Roberto (Berea, Ohio/Berea-Midpark) converted the penalty for a 2-1 Pioneer lead.
"Credit to Roberto for his PK finish," Bergin said. "As is often the case there was some gamesmanship going on and he had to wait a long time before taking it. No problems. Cool finish."
Elliot Britton (High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire/John Hampden Grammar) scored an insurance goal for the Pioneers in the 84th minute with an assist from Ferguson.
Joey Backhouse played all 90 minutes in goal for Marietta recording one save. Evan Laraba had three saves in 90 minutes for the Muskies.
Marietta took 31 shots in the match to just three for the Muskies. The Pioneers also had a 9-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Marietta returns home to host John Carroll University on Saturday (Oct. 8) at 7 p.m.
