MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College women's tennis team notched its first win of the season with a 6-3 decision over Concordia University (Mich.) on Saturday (Sept. 18) at the Beren Tennis Center. The Pioneers are 1-1 on the season, while Concordia falls to 0-2 overall.
The Pioneers led 2-1 after doubles play. Molly Ketchum and Parkar Mauk picked up the first point with an 8-1 win at No. 3 over Katie Vivaqua and Payton Woodruff. Concordia evened the match with a win at No. 1 where Ellie Fritcha and Hollie Johnson were 8-2 winners against Ashton Binegar and
Anne Thompson (Wilmington, Ohio/Clinton-Massie). In the No. 2 match,
Payton Brinks (Mattawan, Mich./Mattawan) and Abigail Hartshorn downed Jadyn Hackmann and Anna Leeper, 8-4.
Concordia earned points in the top two singles positions. At No. 1, Fritcha beat Thompson, 6-1 and 6-0, while Johnson topped Binegar at No. 2, 6-4 and 6-4.
Ketchum defeated Leeper at No. 3, 7-5 and 6-2. Hartshorn was a 6-4, 6-1 winner over Clorissa Smith at No. 4 and Madilyn McKitrick beat Jada Guinn at No. 5, 6-1 and 6-3.
Marietta's final point came from Mauk at No. 6. Mauk and Hackman split the first two sets, 6-3 and 2-6. Mauk was leading the third set, 4-2, when Hackmann retired from the match.
Marietta hosts Ohio Christian University on Saturday (Sept. 25) at 2 p.m.
