MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College men's tennis team dropped a 4-3 decision to Concordia University (Mich.) Saturday (Sept. 18) afternoon at the Beren Tennis Center. The Pioneers slip to 0-2 on the season, while Concordia improves to 1-1 overall.
Marietta was successful at the top of the lineup collecting points at No. 1 doubles and the top two singles positions.
Eric DeLong (Lowell, Ohio/Marietta) and
Spencer Hall (Louisville, Ohio/Louisville) defeated Jacob Gerace and Frank Melcher at No. 1 doubles by the score of 8-6.
DeLong downed Melcher at No. 1 singles in three sets. DeLong took the first set, 6-0, before falling in the second, 5-7. The third set tie breaker went to Delong by the score of 10-5.
It was a similar scenario for Hall at No. 2 singles against Gerace. Hall won the first set, 6-1, and lost the second, 2-6. He won the match with a 10-8 advantage in the deciding set.
The Pioneers had to forfeit the No. 5 singles match giving Concordia its first point of the afternoon. Ethan Hiltz and Tristian Waechter beat Gavin Donnell and David Frazier, 8-2, at No. 2 doubles.
In the No. 3 singles match, Waechter was leading Frazier 6-1 and 3-0 when Frazier retired the match. Hiltz topped Donnell at No. 4, 6-0 and 6-1 for the deciding point of the match.
Marietta hosts Ohio Christian University on Saturday (Sept. 25) at 2 p.m.
