NEW CONCORD, Ohio – The Marietta College women's soccer team earned a 2-0 road win over Muskingum University on Thursday (April 8) evening. With the win the Pioneers improve to 2-4-2 overall and 2-4-2 in Ohio Athletic Conference play and with the loss the Fighting Muskies fall to 0-8 overall and 0-8 in OAC action.
"A fantastic start to the game from our ladies. They came out firing and dominated possession. Two first-half goals were enough in the end to carry us to victory and gain a much needed three points," said Head Coach
Sean Kaighin.
Marietta opened the first half scoring in the fifth minute of the match.
Olivia Alberto (Cincinnati, Ohio/Wyoming) got the play started when she beat her defender along the end line,
Sarah Crim (Mount Clare, W.Va./Byrd) was on the receiving end of the pass and placed the ball into the lower left corner of the net. 13 minutes later, the Pioneers doubled their advantage, when
Paige Trent (Marysville, Ohio/Marysville Early College) intercepted the ball and dribbled past some defenders, she took a shot from about 12 yards out, to put Marietta on top 2-0. The Pioneers entered the intermission ahead, 2-0.
The second half was a scoreless battle and Marietta won the match 2-0. The Pioneers out shot Muskingum 9-7 in the second half, and the teams each tallied a corner kick. Marietta put four of its shots on goal, as Crim,
Taylor Carr (Charleston, W.Va./St. Albans),
Melissa Szawranskyj (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville North), and
Gracie Tate (Toledo, Ohio/Whitmer) all had shots on goal. The Pioneer back line of
Emma Diorio (Bellbrook, Ohio/Bellbrook),
Jasmine Hauser (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty),
Brooke Huffman (Wooster, Ohio/Wooster), and Trent helped keep the Fighting Muskies off the board, and goalie
Katie Conkle (Toledo, Ohio/Whitmer) notched her second shutout of the season.
Conkle played a majority of the game in goal, she faced 11 total shots, four of which were on goal, and made four saves.
Madison Miller (Marietta, Ohio/Warren) saw some late action in goal for Marietta.
The Pioneers will return to the field Sunday (April 11) when they travel to take on Baldwin Wallace University, with kickoff scheduled for 2 p.m.
