Men’s Lacrosse falls to Capital

MARIETTA, Ohio – The Marietta College men's lacrosse team was defeated by Capital University, 14-5 on Wednesday (April 7) evening inside Don Drumm Stadium.  With the win the Crusaders improve to 5-1 overall and with the loss the Pioneers are now 3-5 on the season.

Capital opened the scoring, and held a 3-0 lead at the 13:29 minute mark of the first quarter.  Marietta cut into the lead with a goal at the 8:33 minute mark, when Chase Franklin (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) scored off of a feed from Nate Neal (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park).  The Crusaders scored the final two of the quarter and led, 5-1.

The second quarter opened with eight scoreless minutes of action, but Capital closed the quarter with three unanswered goals, and led 8-1 at the intermission.

After the Crusaders scored the opening goal of the third quarter, the Pioneers answered, Kyle Fleshman (Davidsonville, Md./South River) scored an unassisted goal to make the score 9-2 in favor of Capital.  After five minutes of scoreless third quarter action, the Crusaders scored three straight goals, and led 12-2.  Franklin halted the run for Marietta, as he scored an unassisted goal.  Capital scored the final goal of the quarter, and led 13-3 to enter the final frame.

The Pioneers scored the first two goals of the fourth quarter.  Quinn Rundgren (Angier, N.C./Fuquay Varina) got the scoring started at the 13:47 minute mark with an unassisted goal.  Seven minutes later, Marietta scored their second goal, when Fleshman scored off of a feed from Zach Klein (Evergreen, Co./Evergreen).  The Crusaders scored the final goal of the game, and won 14-5.

Dane Barker (Cincinnati, Ohio/Summit Country Day) played all 60 minutes in goal for the Pioneers, he faced 45 shots, 33 of which were on goal, and made 19 saves.  The 19 saves by Barker is a program record for saves in a game.

Defensively for the Pioneers, Benjamin Hrovat (Jamestown, R.I./Bshop Hendricken) caused a pair of turnovers, and Jacob Morlando (White Bear Lake, Minn./Stillwater), and Cullen Zaferopolos (Olmsted Falls, Ohio/Berea-Midpark) each had a caused turnover.  Morlando also pickeed up four groundballs.
