MARIETTA, Ohio – The Marietta College women's soccer team played John Carroll University to a 1-1 draw in overtime on Monday (April 5) on Marietta Field. With the tie the Pioneers are now 1-4-2 overall and 1-4-2 in the Ohio Athletic Conference, and the Blue Streaks are 3-3-1 overall and 3-3-1 in OAC action.
"This is a tough result to stomach given the fact we were up 1-0. You never want to drop points like that," said Head Coach
Sean Kaighin. "Unfortunately though, this is a game in a very competitive conference where teams who want to be victorious cannot settle for anything less than a full 90 minutes of focus, drive, and determination."
The first half of the match was a scoreless battle, and the teams entered the intermission deadlocked at 0-0. John Carroll out shot Marietta 9-1 in the half, with the lone Pioneer shot coming from
Paige Trent (Marysville, Ohio/Marysville Early College). The back line of Trent,
Jasmine Hauser (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty),
Brooke Huffman (Wooster, Ohio/Wooster), and
Emma Diorio (Bellbrook, Ohio/Bellbrook) helped goalie
Katie Conkle (Toledo, Ohio/Whitmer) pitch a first half shutout. Conkle made four saves in the half.
Marietta got on the board midway through the second half. The Pioneers scored when
Olivia Alberto (Cincinnati, Ohio/Wyoming) played
Theresa LaGreca (Pataskala, Ohio/Watkins Memorial) into space, LaGreca shot from outside the box and drove the ball into the back of the net. In the 81st minute of the match the Blue Streaks tied the game at 1-1, when they scored off of a set piece. The teams battled through the remainder of the half, but regulation ended in a 1-1 draw.
The first overtime period was scoreless. Marietta out shot John Carroll 4-2 in the overtime period. The best opportunity for the Pioneers to score came when LaGreca dribbled past a couple of defenders, but was unable to finish the shot.
The second overtime saw the teams battle for 10 minutes, but neither team was able to score the golden goal. The Blue Streaks out shot Marietta 4-2 in the second overtime with the Pioneers best chance to score coming from a shot from Alberto.
Conkle played all 110 minutes in goal for Marietta, she faced 27 shots, 12 of which were on goal, and made 11 saves in the game.
The Pioneers will return to the field Thursday (April 8) when they travel to take on Muskingum University, with kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m.
