NEW CONCORD, Ohio – The Marietta College men's lacrosse team earned an 11-6 road win over Muskingum University on Saturday (April 3) afternoon. With the win the Pioneers improve to 3-4 overall and 2-3 in Ohio Athletic Conference play, and with the loss the Fighting Muskies fall to 2-5 overall and 2-3 in OAC action.
Marietta got the scoring started in the first minute of the game when
Chase Mullen (Cabot, Pa./Knoch) scored off of a feed from
Connor Ficke (Saint Leonard, Md./Calvert). After seven minutes of scoreless action, Muskingum tied the game at 1-1. The Pioneers regained their lead at the 2:24 minute mark of the opening quarter, when Ficke scored off an assist from Mullen. Marietta entered the second quarter ahead, 2-1.
Marietta pulled away in the second quarter, as they rattled off five unanswered goals to lead, 7-1 at the intermission.
Quinn Rundgren (Angier, N.C./Fuquay Varina) led the second quarter offense with three goals, and
Zach Radcliffe (Bethel Park, Pa. /Bethel Park) scored the other two goals of the quarter. Three of the five goals were assisted as Ficke had a pair, and
Jackson McGill (New Market, Md./Oakdale) notched an assist.
After five minutes of scoreless action to open the third quarter, the Pioneers broke the scoring drought when Ficke found the back of the net. The Fighting Muskies scored the next three goals, to trim the Marietta advantage to 8-4, with just over a minute to play in the third quarter. The Pioneers tacked on a pair of goals in the final minute of the quarter, when Radcliffe, and Ficke scored off assists from Rundgren. Marietta entered the fourth quarter on top 10-4.
Muskingum scored a pair of goals to open the fourth quarter, which made the score 10-6 in favor of the Pioneers. Marietta scored the final goal of the game when
Nate Neal (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) found the back of the net, and the Pioneers won, 11-6.
Dane Barker (Cincinnati, Ohio/Summit Country Day) played all 60 minutes in goal for Marietta, he faced 34 shots, 16 of which were on goal, and made 10 saves.
The Pioneers had a trio of attackers score three goals in the game in Ficke, Radcliffe, and. Rundgren, and Ficke had a team high three assists. McGill and
Nathan Grover (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) tied for a game high seven groundballs. Defensively Marietta was led by
Zach Rush (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville Central), he caused a game high five turnovers.
The Pioneers will return to the field Wednesday (April 7) when they host Capital University, with the game scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
