AUSTINTOWN, Ohio — Marietta College junior Sam Mathews (Fairfield, Ohio/Badin) was named the Ohio Athletic Conference Baseball Pitcher of the Week Monday (April 26) afternoon by the conference office. This is the second weekly award for Mathews.

Mathews pitched 5.0 innings of two-hit, scoreless relief in Friday's 5-4 win at Muskingum. He struck out seven and didn't walk a batter as the Pioneers came from behind to beat the Muskies.

In the first game on Sunday, Mathews threw the final 3.0 innings to get the win in Marietta's 6-5, 11-inning victory. He gave up no runs on two hits and struck out two Muskie hitters.

For the season, Mathews is 5-1 with four saves and a 0.98 earned run average. He has 48 strikeouts with just four walks in 36.2 innings of work. He leads the OAC in earned run average and saves and is second in wins and third in strikeouts.
