MARIETTA, Ohio — Capital University defeated Marietta College by the score of 6-3 in Ohio Athletic Conference men's tennis action Tuesday (April 20) afternoon at the Beren Tennis Center. The Pioneers fall to 0-5 overall and 0-5 in the OAC, while Capital improves to 1-3 on the season and 1-3 in conference play.
The Crusaders jumped out to a 3-0 lead with a sweep of the doubles matches. Graeme Green and Ven Naik downed Ali Al Saffar and
Spencer Hall (Louisville, Ohio/Louisville) at No. 1 by the score of 8-2. In the NO. 2 match,
Eric DeLong (Lowell, Ohio/Marietta) and
Nathan Hanning (Nelsonville, Ohio/Alexander) fell to Aaron Askew and Nathan Hartzler, 8-5. Capital completed the sweep with an 8-4 win from Josh Aude and Jack Schwarz at No. 3 over
Kylar Wheeler (/) and
Tyler Wise (Marietta, Ohio/Marietta).
Capital secured the team victory with straight-set singles wins at Nos. 5, 1 and 2. Hartzler defeated Al Saffar at No. 5, 6-1 and 6-0. Green beat DeLong at No. 1, 6-1 and 6-0, while Naik took down Hall at No. 2, 6-3 and 6-1.
Hanning gave the Pioneers their first point at No. 6 against Schwarz. After losing the first set, 2-6, he came back to post a 6-4 win in the second set. Hanning pulled out a 10-8 win in the third for the win.
Wise followed a similar path to victory at No. 4. Askew won the first set, 6-1, only to see Wise take the second, 7-5. Wise then posted a 10-5 win in the third.
The Pioneers' final point came from Wheeler at No. 3. Wheeler defeated Aude, 6-2 and 7-5.
Marietta hosts Otterbein University at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday (April 22).
