Jared Weiss (Uniontown, Ohio/Green) delivered a two-out, two-run single in the eighth inning leading No. 5 ranked Marietta College to a 7-5 win over Baldwin Wallace University Sunday (April 18) afternoon. Game two of the scheduled Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader was canceled.
Marietta took two out of three games from the Yellow Jackets this weekend improving to 18-3 overall and 16-2 in the OAC. Baldwin Wallace falls to 13-9-1 on the season and 12-6-1 in conference play.
The Etta Express came from behind twice in the game. Baldwin Wallace jumped out to a 3-0 lead with two runs in the first and one in the second.
The Pioneers plated four runs in the top of the third to take a 4-3 lead.
Trent Castle (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) led off with a two-base error on the BW right fielder. Following a strikeout, Weiss knocked in Castle with a single to center and advanced to second on the throw to the plate.
Turner Hill (Marietta, Ohio/Marietta) singled up the middle scoring Weiss.
Damian Yenzi (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) then launched a two-run blast over the left field wall putting the Pioneers in front, 4-3.
The lead was short lived as Baldwin Wallace scored twice in the bottom of the inning chasing Pioneer starter
John Stover (Pittsburgh, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) from the game. Junior
Griffin Malick (Akron, Ohio/Ellet) took over on the mound with one out and runners on the corners and got Marietta out of the inning without any further damage.
Hail and lightning caused the game to be delayed after the fourth inning. The hour-plus delay would later result in game two being canceled.
Malick returned to the mound after the delay and proceeded to shut down the Baldwin Wallace offense. Malick (1-0) threw 4.2 innings of shutout relief for the win. He allowed three hits, walked two and struck out five.
Stover allowed five runs on seven hits in 2.1 innings of work. He walked two and struck out one.
Sam Mathews (Fairfield, Ohio/Badin) got his fourth save of the season with 2.0 innings of scoreless relief. Mathews gave up one hit, one walk and struck out five.
Trailing 5-4 heading into the top of the eighth inning,
Drew Holderbach (Fairfield, Ohio/Badin) led off with an infield single. Following a strikeout, Cottom singled to left moving Holderbach to third. Castle tied the game with a single down the left field line that scored Holderbach and moved Cottom to third.
BW changed pitchers and reliever Kyle Maruna got an infield pop up for the second out of the inning. Weiss followed with his third hit of the game scoring Cottom and Castle for the 7-5 lead.
Gordon Seger (1-1) took the loss for the Yellow Jackets. He gave up three runs on four hits in 4.1 innings of relief. Starter Brendon Hink pitched 2.2 innings and gave up four runs on five hits.
Weiss finished the game 3-for-5 with a double and three RBI. Holderbach had two hits, while Yenzi drove in a pair of runs with his home run.
Marietta plays at rival Muskingum University on Saturday (April 24) for an OAC doubleheader at 1 p.m.
