Women's Tennis falls to Mount Union

MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College women's tennis team dropped a hard fought match to the University of Mount Union by the score of 6-3 Saturday (April 17) afternoon. The Pioneers fall to 1-4 overall and 1-3 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. Mount Union moves to 1-3 on the season and 1-2 in the OAC.

Mount Union grabbed the first point of the match when Sydney Scotford and Emma Thornton beat India Flores (Waverly, W.Va./Williamstown) and Reagan Haas (Marietta, Ohio/Parkersburg Catholic (W.Va.)) at No. 2 doubles, 8-0. The Pioneers evened the score with an 8-1 win from Payton Brinks (Mattawan, Mich./Mattawan) and Abigail Hartshorn at No. 3 over Taylor Fultz and Marissa Scobee.

Mount Union's No. 1 team of MacKenzie Cavalier and Emily Messina topped Destiny Grim (Vermilion, Ohio/Vermilion) and Anne Thompson (Wilmington, Ohio/Clinton-Massie), 8-1, to take a 2-1 lead after doubles.

Haas tied the match, 2-2, with a win at No. 4 singles over Scotford, 6-1 and 6-0. But the Purple Raiders answered with a win at No. 3wWhere Thornton posted a 6-0, 6-1 win against Flores. After Hartshorn defeated Scobee at No. 6, 6-2 and 6-1, the match was tied, 3-3.

The Purple Raiders sealed the team victory with wins at Nos. 1 and 5. In the top spot, Cavalier bested Thompson, 6-1 and 6-0. Fultz won at No. 5 against Ketchum, 3-6, 6-0 and 6-4.

The No. 2 singles match went to Mount Union. Messina edged Grim, 3-6, 7-5 and 10-5.

The Pioneers are back in action on Thursday (April 22) when Otterbein University visits the Beren Tennis Center for a 3:30 p.m. match.
