Softball drops pair at Baldwin Wallace

BEREA, Ohio — Baldwin Wallace University swept an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader from Marietta College Saturday (April 17) afternoon. The Yellow Jackets took game one, 5-1, and then completed the sweep with a 7-5 win in game two.

Marietta falls to 9-13 overall and 9-13 in the OAC. Baldwin Wallace improves to 17-7 on the season and 15-7 in league play.

Baldwin Wallace took advantage of two Pioneer errors in the bottom of the first inning of game one. The Yellow Jackets loaded the bases with two outs for Alex Kozich. Kozich cleared the bases with a grand slam over the wall in right field.

The Yellow Jackets added an insurance run in the sixth, while Marietta got on the board in the seventh. Rachel Kazmirski (Colliers, W.Va./Brooke) reached on a two-out double and was lifted for pinch runner, Natalie Payton (St. Marys, W.Va./St. Marys). Jordan Pallay (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Bradley) ripped a single to center scoring Payton.

Nikki Camarati (11-1) went the distance in the circle for BW. She scattered four hits and gave up one run while walking two and striking out 13 in 7.0 innings of work.

Maddi Liston (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington Central) (4-4) started and took the loss. Liston threw 2.0 innings and allowed four runs, all unearned, on one hit. She walked one and struck out one. Breanna Zirkle (Pomeroy, Ohio/Meigs) pitched the final 4.0 innings and allowed one run on four hits with one strikeout.

Baldwin Wallace built a 5-0 lead in the second game and then held off a late charge from the Pioneers.

Ashley Matousek provided the big blow for the Yellow Jackets with a three-run home run in the third inning.

Marietta scored an unearned run in the fourth. A throwing error by the BW shortstop allowed Kylie Daugherty (Newport, Ohio/Frontier) to reach base and advance all the way to third. Anna Swierczewski (Natrona Heights, Pa./Saint Joseph) drove her in with a sac fly to centerfield.

Baldwin Wallace added two runs in the fifth for a 7-1 lead. The Pioneers rallied in the sixth but came up two runs short. Jess Brown (Brookville, Ohio/Brookville) smacked a grand slam to left to make it 7-5.

Hannah Welling (5-4) got the win for BW. Welling started and worked 5.1 innings. She allowed four runs on eight hits with two walks and four strikeouts.
