No. 5 Baseball splits with Baldwin Wallace

MARIETTA, Ohio — The No. 5 ranked Marietta College Pioneers split an Ohio Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader with Baldwin Wallace University Saturday (April 17). Marietta won game one, 7-6, in ten innings. BW took game two, 11-7.

Marietta moves to 17-3 overall and 15-2 in the OAC. The Pioneers are currently in first place in the conference standings. Baldwin Wallace sits in second place with a 12-5-1 OAC record. The Yellow Jackets are 13-8-1 overall.

The Pioneers plated one run in the bottom of the ninth inning to tie the game, 6-6, and then won the game with a run in the tenth.
 
Brady Cottom (Matthews, N.C./Butler) reached on a two-out infield single to get things rolling in the ninth. Cottom moved into scoring position on a balk. Trent Castle (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) followed with an RBI single up the middle scoring Cottom with the tying run.

Turner Hill (Marietta, Ohio/Marietta) led off the tenth with a single to center. After a failed bunt attempt, Zach Boyd (Kent, Ohio/Tallmadge) grounded out moving Hill to second. After Drew Holderbach (Fairfield, Ohio/Badin) was intentionally walked, Hill stole third and scored when the throw ended up in left field.

Sam Mathews (Fairfield, Ohio/Badin) (3-1) got the win in relief. Mathews pitched 4.0 innings and gave up three unearned runs on three hits with one walk and five strikeouts. Gino Sabatine (Alliance, Ohio/West Branch) started and went 6.0 innings allowing three runs on seven hits.

Drew Wilson (2-2) was tagged with the loss. Wilson gave up four runs on six hits in 2.2 innings. Nik Baldis started and threw 3.0 innings giving up three runs on five hits.

Hill and Damian Yenzi (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) each had three hits for the Pioneers. Boyd and Castle had two hits apiece.

The roles reversed in game two as the Pioneers took a 7-5 lead into the ninth inning. Baldwin Wallace plated six runs in the top of the ninth on just one base hit for the 11-7 win. Marietta pitchers walked four and beaned three BW hitters in the inning.

Trent Valentine (Byesville, Ohio/Cambridge) (1-1) took the loss. He was charged with three runs on one hit with one walk and one hit batsman without recording an out. Nicklaus Brown (Kenton, Ohio/Benjamin Logan) started and threw 2.0 innings. He gave up two runs on four hits. Dalton Wiggins (Mineral Wells, W.Va./Parkersburg South) pitched 6.0 innings and allowed three runs on seven hits with four strikeouts.

Clay Anderson (1-0) picked up the win in relief. Anderson faced two hitters in the bottom of the eighth inning walking on before getting the final out of the frame. Drew Schaly started and pitched 5.0 innings. Schaly allowed four runs, two earned, on six hits.

Jared Weiss (Uniontown, Ohio/Green), Alex Page (Monroe, Ohio/Monroe), Hill and Cottom each had two hits in the game for Marietta.

The Pioneers travel to Berea for an OAC doubleheader at Baldwin Wallace on Sunday (April 18) at 1 p.m.
