UNIVERSITY, HTS., Ohio – The Marietta College women's lacrosse team was defeated 24-3 by John Carroll University, on Wednesday (April 14) evening. With the win the Blue Streaks improve to 13-0 overall and 13-0 in Ohio Athletic Conference play and with the loss the Pioneers are now 6-7 overall and 6-7 in OAC action.
"Tough night for us on the scoreboard, but I am very pleased with the team's attitude during the game. Our goal going into the game was to focus on individual development and maintain positivity as a team by fighting no matter what and not hanging our heads," said Head Coach
Malory Nadrah. "The team did a great job achieving those goals and grinding hard the entire game. We have some things to work on for the last part of our season, but our heads are in a great space."
John Carroll jumped out to a lead early in the game, and lead 10-0 at the 17:28 minute mark of the half. Three minutes later Marietta got on the board when
Megan Marshall (Naples, Fla./Estero) scored off of a free position shot. The Blue Streaks scored the final seven goals of the half, and led 17-1 at the intermission.
"Marshall played a great game tonight. We've been working on her left handed dodges and she was able to finish tonight off a lefty eight meter. We're hoping to see much more of that in our last few games," concluded Coach Nadrah.
John Carroll opened the second half with back to back goals. The Pioneers answered with a pair of goals of their own. The first Marietta goal was scored by
Megan McGriff (Lakewood, Colo./Bear Creek), and three minutes later
Hope Adams (Delaware, Ohio/Bishop Watterson) notched a Pioneers goal. The Blue Streaks scored the final five goals of the game, and won 24-3.
Maddie Leers (Crystal Lake, Ill./Barrington) played all 60 minutes in goal, she faced 40 shots, 33 of which were on goal, and made nine saves in the game.
Brogan Hurd (Halethrope, Md./Catonsville) and
Marley Phillippe (Easton, Md./Easton) led the defense. Hurd caused a pair of turnovers and picked up a ground ball and Phillippe caused a turnover and picked up a groundball.
Kyla Andreas (Shirley, N.Y./Longwood) pulled in a pair of draw controls to lead the Pioneers.
Emma Purington (Columbus, Ohio/Hamilton Township), and
Kayla Kearns (Preston, Md./Easton) tied for a team lead in groundballs with two.
Marietta will return to the field Saturday (April 17) when they travel to take on the University of Mount Union, with the game scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
