ZANESVILLE, Ohio — The Marietta College women's tennis team won its first match of the season, 8-1, over Muskingum University Monday (April 12) afternoon. The Pioneers improve to 1-3 overall and 1-2 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. The Muskies fall to 0-2 overall and 0-2 in the OAC.
The Pioneers swept all three doubles matches for the early lead.
Anne Thompson (Wilmington, Ohio/Clinton-Massie) and
Destiny Grim (Vermilion, Ohio/Vermilion) defeated Gracie Andrews and Kayla Hall by the score of 9-7 in the No. 1 doubles match. At No. 2,
India Flores (Waverly, W.Va./Williamstown) and
Reagan Haas (Marietta, Ohio/Parkersburg Catholic (W.Va.)) were 8-4 winners over Evelyn Pauquette and Amanda Plaskett.
Abby Ketchum (Marietta, Ohio/Marietta) and Abigail Hartshorn downed Kaylee Anstaett and Jane Boyer by the same 8-4 score at No. 3.
Marietta posted wins in the top three singles positions. At No. 1, Thompson beat Andrews, 5-7, 6-4 and 1-0 (13-11). Grim took down Pauquette at No. 2 in straight sets, 6-3 and 6-0. Flores topped Plasket at No. 3, 6-4 and 6-4.
Muskingum got its lone point of the match at No. 4 singles. Hall edged Hass, 6-3, 4-6 and 1-0 (10-8) to avoid the sweep.
Ketchum defeated Anstaett at No. 5, 7-5 and 6-1, while Hartshown took the No. 6 match from Boyer, 6-1 and 6-2.
Marietta hosts Otterbein University in both men's and women's tennis this Wednesday (April 14) at 1 p.m.
