BEREA, Ohio — The Marietta College men's tennis team dropped a 7-2 decision at Baldwin Wallace University Saturday (April 10) morning. The Pioneers slip to 0-3 on the season and 0-3 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. Baldwin Wallace is 1-0 overall and 1-0 in the OAC.
Freshman
Kylar Wheeler (/) accounted for Marietta's two points. Along with partner
Tyler Wise (Marietta, Ohio/Marietta), Wheeler posted an 8-6 win at No. 2 doubles over Edwin Schartman and Anthony Tosatto. Wheeler then got the best of Schartman at No. 4 singles, 6-2 and 6-0.
The Yellow Jackets led 2-1 after doubles. In the No. 1 doubles match Michael Benotti and Trey Kernan were 8-1 winners over
Eric DeLong (Lowell, Ohio/Marietta) and
Spencer Hall (Louisville, Ohio/Louisville). Jonathan Brunnet and Mateo Gonzalez took the No. 3 doubles match from Ali Al Saffar and
Nathan Hanning (Nelsonville, Ohio/Alexander) by the score of 8-2.
Baldwin Wallace won the top three singles matches to secure the team victory. Kernan beat DeLong at No. 1, 6-1 and 6-2. Benotti too down Hall at No. 2, 6-2 and 6-0. In the No. 3 match, Tosatto blanked Wise, 6-0 and 6-0.
The best match of the afternoon came at No. 5 singles between Brunnet and Hanning. Hanning won the first set 6-3 and Brunnet took the second 6-4 forcing a deciding third set. Brunnet won the match with a thrilling 12-10 decision in the third.
In the final singles match, Gonzalez posted a 6-4, 6-1 win over Al Saffar.
Marietta is back in action on Wednesday (April 14) when Otterbein University comes to won for a 1 p.m. match.
