MARIETTA, Ohio – The Marietta College women's soccer team was victorious over the University of Mount Union, 2-0 on Thursday (April 1) evening on Marietta Field. The win improves to the Pioneers record to 1-4-1 overall and 1-4-1 in the Ohio Athletic Conference, and with the loss the Purple Raiders are now 1-4-1 overall and 1-4-1 in OAC action.
"What a fantastic result for these ladies tonight. A true testament to the will power behind a team leaving it all on the field and battling for every second of the match," said Head Coach
Sean Kaighin. "We are excited, and we are proud, but we have got work to do still."
Marietta got on the board in the 16th minute of the match.
Sarah Crim (Mount Clare, W.Va./Byrd)m got the play started when she hit a shot off the far post, the ball bounced back into the box and
Anna Bardwell (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville Central) calmly placed the ball into the back of the net, to put the Pioneers on top, 1-0. Marietta doubled its advantage in the 30th minute of the match when
Demi Mills (Batavia, Ohio/West Clermont) put the ball into a dangerous area, and
Olivia Alberto (Cincinnati, Ohio/Wyoming) collected the ball, beat a defender, and finished for the Pioneers. The goals by Bardwell, and Alberto were the first of their college careers, and Marietta led 2-0 at the intermission.
The second half was a scoreless battle, and the Pioneers won the game, 2-0. The Marietta back line of
Paige Trent (Marysville, Ohio/Marysville Early College),
Jasmine Hauser (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty),
Brooke Huffman (Wooster, Ohio/Wooster), and
Emma Diorio (Bellbrook, Ohio/Bellbrook) helped goalie
Katie Conkle (Toledo, Ohio/Whitmer), keep Mount Union off the scoreboard in the second half. Conkle played tremendous in the second half making nine saves.
Conkle played all 90 minutes in goal for the Pioneers, she faced 21 shots, 15 of which were on goal, and made 15 saves. Conkle earned the win and her first shutout of the season.
Marietta will return to the field Monday (April 5) when they host John Carroll University, with kickoff scheduled for 4 p.m.
