WILMINGTON, Ohio – The Marietta College women's soccer team was defeated by Wilmington College in overtime, 1-0 on Sunday (March 28) afternoon. With the win the Quakers improve to 2-1-2 overall and 2-1-2 in the Ohio Athletic Conference, and with the loss the Pioneers are now 0-4-1 overall.
"Such an unfortunate, and very unlucky loss today in extra time. We battled physically and clearly played a better style of soccer," said Head Coach
Sean Kaighin. "We're young, but we're eager to learn and must take this on the chin and press on."
The first half was a defensive battle, as the match remained deadlocked at 0-0 through 45 minutes of action. Wilmington out-shot Marietta 9-4 in the first half. The Pioneers best chance to score came when
Kaylie Ward (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio/Cuyahoga Falls) forced the Wilmington goalie to make a save.
The second half was a hard-fought scoreless battle. The teams were unable to muster a goal, and regulation ended deadlocked at 0-0. In the second half the Quakers out-shot Marietta 4-2, and both Pioneer shots were on goal. The shots on goal came from
Olivia Alberto (Cincinnati, Ohio/Wyoming) and
Emma Diorio (Bellbrook, Ohio/Bellbrook). The back line of Diorio,
Paige Trent (Marysville, Ohio/Marysville Early College), and
Brooke Huffman (Wooster, Ohio/Wooster) helped goalie
Katie Conkle (Toledo, Ohio/Whitmer) keep the Quakers off the board for 90 minutes.
Wilmington scored the golden goal in the 99th minute of the match, and the Quakers won, 1-0.
Conkle played the entire game in goal for Marietta, she faced 17 shots, six of which were on goal, and made five saves.
The Pioneers will return to action Thursday (April 1) when they host the University of Mount Union, with kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m.
