Men’s Lacrosse victorious at Wilmington

WILMINGTON, Ohio – The Marietta College men's lacrosse team earned a 22-2 dominate road win over Wilmington College, on Saturday (March 27) afternoon.  With the win the Pioneers improve to 2-4 overall and 1-3 in the Ohio Athletic Conference and with the loss the Quakers fall to 0-6 overall and 0-4 in OAC action.  

Marietta got off to a quick start when Connor Ficke (Saint Leonard, Md./Calvert) scored an unassisted goal, less than a minute into the game.  Three minutes later the Pioneers tacked on a second goal, as Quinn Rundgren (Angier, N.C./Fuquay Varina) found the back of the net off a feed from Ficke.  Forty seconds later, Marietta made the score 3-0 when Rundgren notched his second goal, off an assist from Kyle Fleshman (Davidsonville, Md./South River).  Ficke put the Pioneers up 4-0 with his second goal of the day off a feed from Zach Radcliffe (Bethel Park, Pa. /Bethel Park). Nearly five minutes later, Marietta made the score 5-0 when James Everson (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy) scored the first goal of his college career.  The Pioneers closed the first quarter scoring with a goal in the final five seconds, when Radcliffe scored off a pass from Ficke, to lead 6-0.  

Marietta carried its momentum over to the second quarter, as they outscored Wilmington, 7-0.  The Pioneer goals were scored by Jackson McGill (New Market, Md./Oakdale), Ficke, Chase Mullen (Cabot, Pa./Knoch), Radcliffe, Justin Blasko (Poland, Ohio/Poland Seminary), and Fleshman.  Four of the goals were assisted, with assists from Zach Klein (Evergreen, Co./Evergreen), Ficke, and Fleshman.  

Marietta opened the third quarter scoring, three minutes in, when Nate Neal (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) scored an unassisted goal.  The Quakers got on the board at the 9:37 minute mark, to make the score 14-1 in favor of the Pioneers.  After six minutes of scoreless action, Marietta made the score 15-1 when Chase Franklin (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) scored an unassisted goal.  Two minutes later, the Pioneers scored the final goal of the quarter when Logan Podgorski (Pittsburgh, Pa./Bethel Park) scored off an assist from Tommy Ferger (Glen Burnie, Md./North County).  

Marietta opened the fourth quarter with three straight goals to lead 19-1.  The Pioneer goals were scored by Ferger, Franklin, and Podgorski, with assists by Mullen and Blasko.  After a Wilmington goal made the score 19-2, Marietta answered with three goals to close out the game.  The final goals were scored by Podgorski, Ferger, and Fleshman.  The Pioneers won the game, 22-2.  

Dane Barker (Cincinnati, Ohio/Summit Country Day) and Cam Everson (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy) each split time in the net, the duo faced 13 shots, five of which were on goal, and made three saves.  

Ficke led the attack with a game high in goals and assists with four and five respectively. Podgorski added three goals in the game.  Defensively, Zach Rush (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville Central) and Blasko each caused a turnover.           

Marietta will return to the field Saturday (April 3) when they travel to take on Muskingum University, with the game scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
