Ohio Northern downs Softball twice on Sunday

ADA, Ohio — The Marietta College softball team dropped an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader at Ohio Northern University Sunday (March 21) afternoon. The Polar Bears won game one, 15-9, and then completed the sweep with a 6-0 win in game two.

Marietta falls to 1-7 on the season and 1-7 in the OAC. Ohio Northern improves to 5-5-1 overall and 5-4 in the OAC.

The first game was a back-and-forth affair with the Pioneers turning a 6-5 deficit into a 9-6 lead in the middle of the sixth inning. Ohio Northern exploded for nine runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to grab the 15-9 win.

Marietta scored in each of the first three innings and led 5-4 head into the fourth inning. Kylie Daugherty (Newport, Ohio/Frontier) had an RBI double in the first to start the Pioneer scoring. Maicy added a two-run double in the second inning, while Rachel Kazmirski (Colliers, W.Va./Brooke) and Jess Brown (Brookville, Ohio/Brookville) each drove in a run in the third.

With the game ties, 6-6, the Pioneers plated three runs in the top of the sixth inning. Jordan Pallay (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Bradley) and Whitley Arno (Hamilton, Ohio/Ross) each had an RBI double in the rally.

In the bottom of the frame, Ohio Northern took advantage of two Pioneer errors to score nine unearned runs.

Sarah Keating (Wadsworth, Ohio/Wadsworth) started in the circle for Marietta. She worked 3.2 innings and allowed five runs, four earned, on three hits. Ashton Helmke (Defiance, Ohio/Tinora) (0-2) took the loss after giving up seven runs, two earned, on five hits in 2.1 innings. She walked one and struck out three.

Allie Bican got the start for the Polar Bears and pitched 3.0 innings allowing five runs on four hits with three walks and two strikeouts. Demi Sauter threw 2.1 innings and gave up four unearned runs on six hits. MarcQue Harris (1-0) got the win after throwing 1.2 shutout innings.

Arno went 2-for-3 with two doubles for the Pioneers.

In the second game Ohio Northern scored a run in the third and another in the fourth. The Polar Bears put the game away with four more runs in the sixth for the 6-0 victory.

Airyanna Maurer (Marysville, Ohio/Marysville) (0-2) took the loss for Marietta. She worked 5.1 innings and gave up six runs on six hits with four strikeouts. Maddi Liston (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington Central) gave up one hit and struck out one in 0.2 innings of relief.

Stacey Walters (3-1) went the distance in the circle for Ohio Northern to get the win. She scattered five hits, walked three and struck out six in the shutout.

Kaitlyn Carpenter (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington North) was the lone Pioneer with two hits in the game, including a double.

Marietta travels to Wilmington on Saturday (March 27) for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
