WILMINGTON, Ohio — Wilmington College swept an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader from Marietta College by the scores of 1-0 and 6-1 Saturday (March 27) afternoon. The Pioneers slip to 1-9 overall and 1-9 in the OAC. Wilmington improves to 8-6 on the season and 7-3 in the OAC.
The lone run in the first game came in the bottom of the first inning. Wilmington leadoff hitter Megan Crager smacked a solo home run for what would prove to be the game winner.
Pioneer starter
Maddi Liston (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington Central) (1-2) settled down and held the Quakers scoreless the rest of the way. Liston pitched 6.0 innings and allowed one run on four hits. She walked one and struck out five.
Wilmington's Lindsey Carter (3-2) went the distance in the circle for the shutout win. She tossed 7.0 innings and scattered three hits. Carter walked one and struck out one.
Marietta got a one-out double from
Whitley Arno (Hamilton, Ohio/Ross) in the top of the seventh.
Makayla Cordle (Columbus, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson) pinch ran for Arno and moved to third on a flyout by
Jess Brown (Brookville, Ohio/Brookville). The Quakers got pinch hitter
Hannah Richardson (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville Central) to pop out to the shortstop for the final out.
Wilmington scored twice in the first inning and added four more in the second inning of the second game.
Marietta's lone run came in the fifth inning.
Micaela Bradley (Greenup, Ill./Cumberland) led off with a single and moved to second on a sac bunt. After a wild pitch allowed Bradley to move over to third,
Kaitlyn Carpenter (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington North) hit a sac fly to center scoring Bradley.
Bradley finished 2-for-4 with a double.
Jordan Pallay (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Bradley) also had a pair of singles in the game.
Alexis Stringfellow (3-1) threw a 7.0 inning complete game allowing one run on eight hits. She struck out four.
Rachel Kazmirski (Colliers, W.Va./Brooke) (0-4) started in the circle for the Pioneers. She worked 1.1 innings and gave up five runs on six hits with one walk. Richardson threw 0.2 innings and gave up one run on two hits.
Airyanna Maurer (Marysville, Ohio/Marysville) pitched 4.0 innings and allowed no runs on two hits.
Marietta hosts Wilmington College for an OAC doubleheader on Sunday (March 28) at 1 p.m.
