Women’s Lacrosse victorious over Heidelberg

MARIETTA, Ohio – The Marietta College women's lacrosse team earned a 12-5 victory over Heidelberg University on Saturday (March 20) afternoon on Marietta Field.  With the win the Pioneers improve to 3-5 overall and 3-5 in Ohio Athletic Conference play, and with the loss the Student Princes fall to 0-8 overall and 0-8 in the OAC.  

"Our transition protection has really improved since the start of the season. Brogan had a great game back today. She played great in our transitions after making some big caused turnovers. Marley also has really stepped up her transition game and plays a big role in us having successful clears," said Head Coach Malory Nadrah.  

Marietta got on the board first, four minutes into the game, when Hope Adams (Delaware, Ohio/Bishop Watterson) scored an unassisted goal.  Heidelberg answered with a pair of goals, and led 2-1 at the 21:44 minute mark of the half.  About two minutes later Megan McGirff tied the game at 2-2 when she scored off a feed from Kayla Kearns (Preston, Md./Easton).  A minute later Shelby Millheim (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom) put the Pioneers on top 3-2, when she found the back of the net off an assist from Natalie Cocco (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township)Rachel Sivie (Washington, Pa./Trinity) scored the final goal of the half, and Marietta held a 4-2 advantage at the intermission.

The Pioneers pulled away early in the second half, as they scored five unanswered goals to lead, 9-2 with 20 minutes to play in the game.   The Marietta goals were scored by Shannon Doyle (Gibsonia, Pa/Mars Area), who had three goal, and Mackenzie Dyott (Easton, Md./Easton) had the other two.  Adams had an assist during that span.  After the Student Princes scored a pair of goals to make the score 9-4, the Pioneers answered with two goals of their own.  The Marietta goals were scored by Adams and Sivie, to lead 11-4 with five minutes to play in the game.  After a Heidelberg goal, the Pioneers scored the final goal of the game, when Casey Roeder (Milford, Ohio/Milford) scored off a feed from Doyle.  Marietta won the game, 12-5.

Maddie Leers (Crystal Lake, Ill./Barrington) played all 60 minutes in goal, she faced 18 shots, 10 of which were on goal, and made six saves.  Leers notched her third win on the season.  

The Pioneers were led by Doyle, he scored three goals, tallied an assist, and pulled down two draw controls.  Adams, Dyott, and Sivie each added a pair of goals in the game.  Brogan Hurd (Halethrope, Md./Catonsville) led the way for the Marietta defense, she caused a game high four turnovers, and picked up five groundballs.  Marley Phillippe (Easton, Md./Easton) played solid defense, as she forced a turnover and picked up a pair of groundballs.   

The Pioneers will return to the field Wednesday (March 31) when they host Muskingum University, with the game scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
