Women’s Lacrosse earns convincing win over Muskingum

MARIETTA, Ohio – The Marietta College women's lacrosse team earned a convincing 21-7 victory over Muskingum University, on Wednesday (March 31) evening on Marietta Field.  With the win the Pioneers improve 4-5 overall and 4-5 in the Ohio Athletic Conference, and with the loss the Fighting Muskies fall to 1-6 overall and 1-6 in OAC action.

Head Coach Malory Nadrah said, "Great team win tonight. We could've played better defense and performed better on the circle at some points, but overall we got the job done and executed our game plan. It was great to see a lot of people contribute on the attacking end and start producing on our drives and feeds."

Marietta opened the scoring early, as Hope Adams (Delaware, Ohio/Bishop Watterson) scored the opening goal 30 seconds into the game, to put the Pioneers on top 1-0.  Six minutes later, Adams scored back to back goals to put Marietta on top 3-0, at the 22:33 minute mark.  After a Muskingum goal, the Pioneers rattled off three consecutive goals to lead, 6-1 with 18 minutes to play in the half.  Rachel Sivie (Washington, Pa./Trinity) scored two goals, and Shannon Doyle (Gibsonia, Pa/Mars Area) scored the other goal.  The Fighting Muskies answered with back to back goals to make the score 6-3, with just under 15 minutes to play in the half.  Less than a minute later, Doyle scored a pair of goals to put Marietta on top 8-3, the second of Doyle's goals was assisted by Mackenzie Dyott (Easton, Md./Easton).  Muskingum scored two of the next three goals, to make the score 9-5 in favor of the Pioneers.  The Marietta goal was scored by Adams.  The Pioneers rattled off seven consecutive goals to end the half, and led 16-5 at the intermission.  Doyle, Megan McGriff (Lakewood, Colo./Bear Creek), Sivie, Natalie Cocco (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township), Dyott, and Casey Roeder (Milford, Ohio/Milford) all scored for Marietta during the run.

The Pioneers opened the second half with three straight goals, when Brogan Hurd (Halethrope, Md./Catonsville), Jordan Jeffries (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore Polytechnic), and Sophia Verona (Shinnston, W. Wa./Our Lady of Victory) all found the back of the net. The goals by Hurd and Jeffries, where the first of their college careers.  After a Muskingum goal, Anna Callow (Wadsworth, Ohio/Wadsworth) scored a pair of goals for Marietta, to put the Pioneers on top 21-6, with 14 minutes to play in the game.  The Fighting Muskies scored the final goal of the game, but Marietta won 21-7.

Maddie Leers (Crystal Lake, Ill./Barrington) played all 60 minutes in goal for the Pioneers, she faced 20 shots, 17 of which were on goal, and made 10 saves in the game.  Leers notched her fourth win on the season.

The Marietta offense was led by Adams, and Doyle, the duo each tallied four goals in the game.  Sivie added three goals, and Callow and McGriff each had a pair of goals.  Roeder played a tremendous game on the circle and tied a program record for draw controls in a game with eight.  Kyla Andreas (Shirley, N.Y./Longwood) added four draw controls in the game.  Taylor Carr (Charleston, W.Va./St. Albans), Carlee Kernodle (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park), and Marley Phillippe (Easton, Md./Easton) all caused a turnover in the game.

"Casey and Kyla had great performances tonight. They were given specific roles and not only followed them perfectly, but also trusted the staff and game plan. Their performance on the circle was excellent and we're excited to keep that going into the weekend," concluded Coach Nadrah.

The Pioneers will return to the field Saturday (April 3) when they travel to take on Baldwin Wallace, with the game scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
